Samuel Latham Whitehurst Jr.

Samuel Latham Whitehurst Jr passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at his home in Clayton, NC at the age of 78.

Sam was born on May 15, 1944, in New Bern, NC, where he cherished his childhood growing up on the Whitehurst Farm. He also developed a lifelong passion for being on the water, especially the North Carolina coast. Even late in life, his favorite moments were visiting the Farm, being at Harker's Island fishing, or watching a storm build over Shackleford Banks.

A graduate of Wake Forest University and Wake Forest Law School, Sam practiced law in New Bern for many years but was often his happiest working with his hands, making or refinishing furniture or building something for one of his children or his 14 grandchildren. Sam was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Latham Whitehurst, his mother, Penny Wells Whitehurst, and is survived by Nan Williams; his stepmother, Carolyn P. Whitehurst; his sisters, Gay (Odell) Thompson and Sara Jessica Whitehurst; his brother, Fred Whitehurst; and his five children, Colonel (Ret.) Sam (Sallie) Whitehurst, Andrea (Patrick) Kite, Russell Whitehurst, Ashley (Roger) Benton, and Lauren (Ricky) Ortega.

Visitation is Friday, October 21, 10:30 am followed by a funeral service at 11am at Kahlert Funerals and Cremations, 308 Main Street, Maysville, NC, and a graveside gathering at 1pm at Bridgeton Cemetery (intersection of Half Moon Road and Hwy 55).
