Evelyn Christine Mattocks




Evelyn Christine Mattocks known to all as Chris was born on August 17, 1938, in Jones County to the late Julius and Getrude Stang. She was educated in the Jones County Public school system. After a brief career as a domestic specialist she went to school at Harris Barber College in Raleigh NC. where she received her professional license as a barber. Her barbering career included servicing the general public as a business owner and employment with Camp Lejeune Marine Corp base.


Chris was raised in Maysville NC where she joined St. Luke AME Zion church. She was a willing worker for the Lord. She was affectionately known as the “General” because she gave her all and expected you to do the same.


She met the quiet, shy, love of her life from Belgrade; Clen Mattocks. They fell in love and were joined in matrimony on November 27, 1958, and went on to share 58 years of love and friendship. She passed on the legacy of love for God Our Father and love for the family. She was preceded in death by her husband Clen Mattocks Sr. and son Clen Mattocks Jr.


She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters Cathy Brown (Garner) and Samantha Wilkerson (Greensboro NC) and son Richard Mattocks (Betsy) (Clayton NC) and Jimmie Lee Thompson (Selen SC). Special recognition to her nephew Charlie Lawrence better known as Charlie Pop. Sisters Dorothea Mattocks (Percy), Helene Lumumba (Ajamu), Gloria Hargett (New Bern NC) brother Steve Stang (New York); 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.


Funeral Service will be held on Sunday April 30, 2023, 1:00 pm at St. Luke AME Zion Church in Maysville. Burial will follow the service at White Oak Cemetery in Maysville.
