Douglas Allen Barrett

Douglas Allen Barrett

Douglas Allen Barrett, the son of the Late Orlander and Elvirra Barrett, was born on February 4, 1946. He departed this life on September 18, 2022, at CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, NC. He was born and grew up in Spring Garden and the Jasper Community in Craven County and reared at Rio Grande Missionary Baptist Church. In his later years, he attended Pleasant Hill Public School and High School New Bold Training School in Craven County. In 1962, he moved to New York to be with some of the family there. This is where he became a great musician. He played music for many churches and different singers and even had the opportunity to play for our late president, JFK Kennedy in New York City. This was a big engagement he was invited to and it was such an honor.

When Douglas would travel, he carried his guitar and bible with him…everywhere, even to many different states. Everyone loved to hear him play and he was proud of being a self-taught musician.

In the latter years, Douglas also worked as a security guard at Power Stanley Tools, Texfi, and Hatteras Yachts. He was truly loved by everyone and will be dearly missed.

Douglas is preceded in death by his daughter, Debrorah Barrett; wife, Zellean Barrett; sisters, Dorothy Frizelle, Annie Barrett; brothers, Deacon Orlander Barrett, Elder Ederson Barrett, and one great-grandchild.

He leaves to mourn his loss his daughter, Christal Clay of Jacksonville, FL; sisters, Rev. Sallie Barrett of New Bern, NC and Georganna Matthews of El Paso, Texas; stepsister, Minnie Staten of New Bern, NC; four grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one stepson, Randolph Lewis, and wife, Willie; many nieces, nephews, cousins, In-laws, friends, fellow musicians, his pastor, and church family.

A Celebration of Douglas’ Life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 11th, at St. Andrew Lutherans Church of New Bern.
