SHERMAN ALLEN FIELDS

November 13, 1937 - September 26, 2018

Sherman Allen Fields, 80, of New Bern, NC, passed away on September 26, 2018, with his wife, Eliza Olive Fields, by his side.

Sherman was born in LaGrange, NC, on November 13, 1937. He served in the United States Navy from 1954 until 1958, and deeply cherished his service to our country. He graduated from Wheat Swamp High School in LaGrange in 1961. He attended Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC, and graduated from Barton College in Wilson, NC in 1965. He had a lifelong love of history and books, and began his professional career as a high school history teacher in Virginia and North Carolina.

Sherman was a member of First Baptist Church of New Bern for over 40 years, and previously served as a deacon of the church. He was also a member of the York Rite Masonic Lodge.

Sherman was a devoted husband and father and a good friend. His smile could light up a room. He had an interest in and curiosity about other people, exemplified courtesy and respect, was easy to talk to, and was always ready with a story, joke, or observation about life to accompany his warm smile and hearty laugh.

Sherman was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Ann Dawson, and his father, Arnold Fields. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eliza Olive Fields; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Sam Reaves of Charlotte, NC; grandson, Luke Reaves; and sister, Patricia Ann Dawson of Kinston, NC.

The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 239 Middle Street, New Bern, NC 28560, with a memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Worthington Cemetery in Winterville, NC.
