The Story of Matthew Anthony Fothergill
October 23, 1990 – November 8, 2016
This is the story of Matthew (Matt) Fothergill. Matthew was first and foremost God loving, he was a kind hearted, free spirited, funny, beautiful man that will be loved, missed, and forever cherished in our hearts. Our “Matt” as he liked to be called was an amazing father, son, brother, grandson, and friend, but most of all he loved God. He was a professional long distance truck driver, carrying on the trade from both of his grandfathers and one uncle. He loved to cook and clean and he was always thinking of ways to help and please others.
Matt’s story began on October 23, 1990, the youngest child born to Anthony and Karen Fothergill. Matthew was born at Naval Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock North Carolina while his father was away serving in the United States Marine Corp during Operation Dessert Strom. When Matt was around 3 years old his parents bought their first home in New Bern, North Carolina and lived there until moving to Jones County in 2001, just before Matthew’s 11th birthday. By the time Matthew was 17 years old he had met the love of his life. He married in 2009, and became a proud loving father to Khloe’ Victoria Fothergill on July 31st, 2010. His love for Khloe’ was instant as I remember the tears that flowed from his eyes when he gazed upon her at her birth. Everyone that knew Matthew immediately knew about Khloe’ as she was his life-force. His blessings continued to be bountiful and on February 7, 2015 Matthew became the very proud Father of twin girls. Ava Marie Solberg Fothergill and Elena Jo Solberg Fothergill. Although the twins lived very far away and he did not have the opportunity to spend a lot of time with them he had an undeniable love for them, and he cherished the time they spent together. When they met for the first time they had an instant bond only to be shared by a father and his daughters. Jones County would become what Matt considered his childhood stomping ground; it was the place where he met some of his closest and most treasured friendship. Matthew considered William (Sunshine) Auger to be his lifelong friend; no matter the time spent apart they could always pick up where they left off. He was also very proud to be a valuable team player for the Jones County Crush team under the coaching of Larry Walston; which is where his love for football began and later transitioned into Trojan Pride. The Trojans went to their first State playoff during his time on the team. Anyone that knew Matthew knew of his love for the game. Matt loved to spend time with his family and always cherished family gatherings; where he was always the life of any social event; his smile and laugh were contagious and his hugs were that of a cozy blanket; he loved to give hugs. He had two older siblings whom he loved and admired more than they will ever realize. He was so proud of each of them for their many life accomplishments. He recently became a big brother to Isaiah whom he also adored. One of his lifelong dreams was to start a local non-profit organization for those who suffer from addiction. Following in his father’s footsteps he had recently enrolled in college to complete his degree in Business Management. Matt was an ultimate achiever, goal driven, and he was so dedicated to any adventure he set his sights upon. Most recently Matthew challenged his Sister Rebecca, Brother Alex, and parents to be participants in their first family Spartan event. He was looking forward to spending the upcoming holidays with his family; this year Christmas was to be spent together enjoying a week-long vacation in the mountains of North Carolina. He adored his grandparents Melvin and Hazel Broughman, and George and Mary Connor as he did all of his many relatives; Uncles, Aunts, Nephews, Nieces, Cousins. Please know how important you all were to him. There is no denying that loved ones will miss you Matthew Anthony Fothergill and so your story will go on. We believe Christ has called you away to be in his mighty army.
God we know you know our pain, as you sacrificed your only son to save mine. I pray you give us the strength we need to carry on until we will see our baby boy again; we will love him and miss him beyond comprehension. Matthew, Fly high on those Angel wings of yours. Love Mama and Daddy
