Nellie “Polly” Morton Marshall, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Polly was born in 1929, to Etta Roberta Conway Morton and Stephen Morton. She was the youngest of her father’s 16 children, and was raised in the Kellum community of Onslow County.
She married, Elmer “Ray” Marshall on her 18th birthday, 1947. Polly and Ray’s journey together found them living in Kinston, NC, Wilmington, NC and then finally home to Onslow County where they raised their family.
After forty years of marriage, her beloved husband Ray, died in 1987. Sadly Polly was also preceded in death by her only son Richard “Rick” Ray Marshall. She is survived by her two daughters; Brenda Miller of Maysville, NC, Wanda Weatherly of Cary, NC, her sister, Mary Etta Pelland of Castle Hayne, NC, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her faithful care provider and friend Terri Riccardi of Jacksonville, NC.
In her youth Polly attended Kellum Baptist Church. Later, she and her husband made their church home at Grants Creek Baptist, where she was a Children’s Sunday School teacher for more than 40 years.
Polly was employed for many years with the Onslow County School System as a Teacher’s Assistant. She retired in 1986. She also drove a school bus! For ten years she volunteered weekly, serving with the Onslow Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in the “Gift Shop.”
There will be a visitation welcoming all family and friends held at Grants Creek Baptist Church on Friday, August 19 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. There will be a private burial for immediate family members only at the Marshall Family Cemetery with Pastor Sandy Bain officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Polly’s memory may be made to the Grants Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 1401 Old 30 Rd, Maysville, NC 28555 and or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
The family extends a sincere heartfelt thank you for the many cards, visits and helping hands that God has used to see us through this difficult time in our lives.
