Robert Michael McMillan, Sr.

Michael, born and raised in Hollywood, FL., moved to New Bern, NC on May 15, 2005 when he married Karen S. Snyder. Michael’s first wife, Sally McMillan, to whom he was married for 25 years, passed away in Florida two years prior.

Michael leaves two sons: Robert Michael McMillan, Jr. (Patricia) of Ft. Myers, FL and Earl Wayne McMillan (Lauren) of Crestview, FL.; two step-daughters: Sarah E. Hines (Rick) of Indianapolis, IN and Esther P. Smith (Ben Hooker) of Greensboro, NC.; two brothers: Ron McMillan (Kelie) of Grosse Pointe, MI and Steve McMillan of Jacksonville, FL.; 5 grandchildren with 2 more expected within weeks.

Michael was a member of First Presbyterian Church in New Bern, where his ashes will be interred in the Memory Garden.

Michael was a graduate of Emory University and Stetson University School of Law, serving as Chief Criminal Defense Attorney for the State of Florida, Pinellas County for many years. Upon moving to New Bern, he and Karen owned and operated the Sail Inn Bed & Breakfast and Michael became the Shelter Director of Religious Community Services before taking on the role of Executive Director of the organization. He retired due to disability in 2015.

Michael died peacefully at home on March 19, 2016 after a long and courageous battle against cancer. He was a graceful, peace-loving man, an advocate for those who had no voice and an example of one who tried to follow the instruction of Micah 6:8: To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

The family wishes to thank the Cancer Center of Duke University and the Cancer Center of Moses Cone Hospital. Community Home Care and Hospice staff were most effective and comforting as Michael lived his last day with their care.
