Suzanne Craig Towe Brake, affectionately known as Craig all of her life, died on November 13, 2014, after a 17-year long battle with breast cancer. She was 67. She was a graduate of Benvenue High School, Rocky Mount, NC and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her first job after graduating from college was as a buyer for Talheimer’s Department Store in Richmond, VA. She spent most of her adult life in Richmond, a city she dearly loved, raised her family there, and made many life-long friends. She moved to New Bern in 1998 and worked for Public Radio East, retiring in 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Marvin and Elizabeth Jackson Towe, and a sister, Catherine (Kitty) Towe Calhoun. She is survived by her husband, George M. Brake; her sons Steve T. Yates and wife Susan, and Wesley E. Yates and wife Katrina; her grandchildren Kelsey, Katie and Craig Yates, all of Richmond, VA; two brothers: James Marvin Towe, Jr., of New Orleans, LA, and Joseph Rogers Towe and wife Debbie of Charlotte, NC; her step-children Thomas W. Brake of Leland, NC, George M. Brake, Jr. and wife Karen of Southport, NC, and Michael M. Brake and wife Jenny of Altadena, CA; and nine step-grandchildren, all of whom she loved as her own. Craig and her family wish to thank the physicians and staff of New Bern Cancer Care for their many years of compassionate care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to one of Craig’s favorite charities: Journey of Hope Cancer Support Center, 1010 Medical Park Ave., New Bern, NC 28562; Colonial Capital Humane Society, PO Box 326, New Bern, NC 28563; or Craven County Arts Council and Gallery, 317 Middle St., New Bern, NC 28560; or a favorite charity of one’s own. The family will receive guests at The Bank of The Arts, 317 Middle Street, New Bern, NC, from 2:00 until 3:30pm, Sunday, November 23.
