Richard Hulin John
Richard Hulin John, 85, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2014. Richard was born September 17, 1928 to Richard Compton John and Winona Sharkey John in Columbus, Ohio. He grew up in Piqua, Ohio where he graduated from high school. He later attended Ohio State University in Columbus. His career in the building industry started with his father in the heating and air conditioning business. An Army veteran, Richard served in Korea in 1953. After discharge, he and his family lived and worked in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Rochester, N.Y. Richard moved to Raleigh in 1964 as Sales Manager for Standard Supply Co. In 1980 he started work in Apartment Management for Drucker and Falk in Florida and Georgia. Later he owned and operated a commercial painting business until his retirement. An avid boater, Richard owned countless boats during his life, and spent many happy hours with friends and family aboard ship.
Richard is survived by his wife, Ruth, daughters, Vicki Monaco (Tony), Cindy Smith (Steve), Karen Anderson (Tim Wade), granddaughters, Emily, Sarah and Stephanie Smith, great grandson Parker Lenox, Brother William S. John of Manchester, Ohio and sister Susan Gau (Larry) of Des Moines, Iowa. Richard never met a stranger. Generous with his time and talents, he leaves behind a host of good friends and acquaintances. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James W. John of Des Moines, Iowa. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday June 17 at 11:00 AM, First Presbyterian Church in New Bern, Rev. Dr. William L. Hawkins presiding. Following the service a Celebration of Richard’s life will be held at the home 1802 Tryon Road, New Bern. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian 3rd Century Capital Campaign, or Community Home Care and Hospice.
